Here are a few easy steps we have found to be helpfull. You might like to ask yourself these before making any decision.

  • Do we need more space?
  • Can we extend our home?
  • Have we got room to extend?
  • Do we need permission to extend?

The first decision is what kind of space is needed, is it to extend existing rooms, a loft conversion or a new garage for that new sports car?

You can extend your home with the right permission. If you are lookin at a rear or side extension there is generally no problem, depending on the depth or width and if planning permission is required. Also it is good to get on with your neighbours because they can object to any planning permissions requested.

If you are thinking of having a loft conversion there are some critical requirements to consider. You will need 2 meters in head height in most cases but bear in mind this is not always the case.

  • How do i get planning permission?

You can find out if you need planning permission by contacting your local council and speaking to the planning office who will explain to you what to do including how they would like the proposed extension to look so that it fits in with neighbouring properties.

  • How long will this take?

All this will take approximately 8 weeks to reach a decision , on receiving permission you will then have to apply for building regulation permission this will take a further 5 weeks or you have the option of submitting a building notice allowing you to start work immediately, this is not uncommon but bear in mind the decision for your extension is based on your building inspectors discretion.
